Redundancy and Homesteading Redundancy and homesteading are concepts that complement each other in various ways. The old adage "2 is 1 and 1 is none" comes into play in our daily lives, regardless of if we realize it or not.

Today we will talk about incubation back up plans. This will not be an incubator review post, we all know everyone has done that before, and they have some great information out there. I will talk about backup plans for incubation, I live in a hurricane area so we are subjected to power outages during that typical time frame, some of you reading this will have the possibility of a power outage from a winter storm, earthquake, flooding or some other form of natural disaster. I will have my personal experiences and backup plans as an example- take it as that, just my opinion from homesteading over the past 15+ in an area that has been affected by many natural disasters.

Incubators- Find a model that best suits your personal needs, not one recommended by someone with an affiliate link trying to make a percentage off the sale, do your own reading and analyze what your goals are to find what will work for you. I'm in no way affiliated with GQF other than being a customer.

Let's dive into this GQF 2365 circulated air and 1588 Genesis Hova-bator- both of these are your typical Styrofoam incubators with nothing real special about them till you read further. They are 12-volt dc models with a 120~240-volt Ac converter. This might not seem important to most reading but let's break down the benefits of these two even as a backup incubator. GQF makes 2 special adapters 1730 - 12 Volt DC Auto Plug & 1730 - 12 Volt DC Auto Plug

With adding one of these to your inventory it gives you a few options- off grid incubation connecting to solar, Incubation during power outages, and much more overall security. By no means am I saying to throw out those cabinet incubators, just merely offering solutions for known problems is my goal. For my Personally I have multiple whole home generators for a power interruption of a few minutes to several weeks but still prefer to keep this handy for emergency situations. These models, like any incubator, I highly recommend using a secondary means of temp and humidity monitoring because I have never seen a single incubator remain accurate.

I'll copy and paste each product directly from the GQF website to avoid plagiarism or misrepresentation of their product. The information above is strictly my opinion and experience.

2365 - Circulated Air Hova-Bator

TUV listed for use in classroom and laboratory settings. 12 Volt wafer thermostat with a fan for circulating air. Two windows provide visibility for monitoring hatches and temperatures. Includes plastic bottom liner and thermometer. Wt. 8 lbs. 12 Volt DC power supply operates on 100 to 240 Volt AC. Only U.S. plug & cord set supplied. Without an automatic turner in place, the incubator will hold 50 duck or chicken eggs or 130 quail eggs. Dimensions 18 1/2” x 18 1/2” x 9 1/2”

1588 - Genesis Hova-Bator

The GENESIS Hova-Bator is TUV LISTED. This certification along with the safety afforded by its 12 Volt system makes it perfect for use in classroom and laboratory settings. It is pre-set for bird eggs. Simply plug it in, then add water for humidity and eggs. While the thermostat set temperature can easily be fine-tuned, most users won’t find it necessary. The LCD will display set temp, actual temp and humidity percentage in both Fahrenheit and Celsius. The pre-set microprocessor-based thermostat digitally regulates itself. The digital technology in this thermostat means the command setting is never affected by changes in humidity, temperature or dust. Built in sensors prevent the “burn up” of eggs. Like all incubators, the GENESIS requires a stable room temperature and should not be used in areas like sheds or barns. Excellent for classrooms, novices, and experts. Thermostat can be set to any temperature required for bird eggs and can also be set for reptile eggs down to 80F provided that the room temperature is low enough to allow it. Includes picture window & plastic bottom liner. TURNER SOLD SEPARATELY. 1588 - 12 Volt DC power supply operates on 100 to 240 Volt AC . Only U.S. plug & cord set supplied. Input: AC 100-240V 50/60 Hz 1.5A Output 3000mA 12Volt Without an automatic turner in place, the incubator will hold 50 duck or chicken eggs or 130 quail eggs. Dimensions 18 1/2” x 18 1/2” x 9 1/2”

1729 - 12 Volt Battery Power Adapter

This cord set allows the 1586, 1588 and 2365 TUV 12VDC Hova-Bators to be attached to a 12 Volt Battery by clips.

1730 - 12 Volt DC Auto Plug

Allows the 1586, 1588, and 2365 TUV 12VDC Hova-Bators to be used with an automobile power socket

These are just a few tips that hopefully will help or inspire you all to think and create your own backup plan.
